Sinatra, Strings with Costa and Reagan

Sinatra and Strings arrived in 1962 as a collection of standards sung by Frank Sinatra. This particular album receives the most accolades and critically praise out of all his Reprise labels. To say the album is instrumentally beautiful and wonderfully romantic is not enough by any means.

Any Sinatra aficionado needs this recording because it’s Sinatra all the way, an exceedingly sensual album. Sinatra brought in Don Costa whom he had never worked with before… Read the rest

Come Fly With Me is Something!

“Come Fly With Me” was produced in 1958 by Voyle Gilmore and was released through Capital Records. Billy May came aboard to work with Frank Sinatra for the first time as arranger and conductor. The theme or concept of the album was a musical trip around the world. Sinatra asked Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen to write the title track, which they did wonderfully.

Sinatra and The Hollywood Quartet

Sinatra teamed up once again with producer Voyle Gilmore and arranger Nelson Riddle in 1957 for the rhapsody album “Close to You.” Accompanied by the Hollywood String Quartet, a well-known group in the music circles of Hollywood film studios would meet during off times to satisfy their desire to play classical music.

The quartet involved four of the most consistent session musicians. They were Felix Slatkin (violin), Eleanor Slatkin (cello), Alvin Dinkin (viola) and Paul… Read the rest

Rickles’s Book: A Review

I’m afraid I’m a little late to the dance on this one; Many moons ago I promised a review of Don Rickles’ new book, Rickles’ Book: A Memoir. Just this past week I received my copy from Amazon and over the course of two brief evenings read through it in its entirety.

One shouldn’t approach this book as a biography, because in actuality it is a series of anecdotes told in largely chronological order.… Read the rest

Rickles’ Book: A Memoir

You would have thought that Don Rickles might have gotten around to this sooner, but I suppose his late-career resurgence has kept him busy, and rightfully so. But now Don has written his book Rickles’ Book: A Memoir about his entertainment career that is sure to be an interesting read, filled with tidbits about Sinatra, the Rat Pack and so many other shoulders Don has rubbed (and bumped) over the years.

Esquire’s Best – Frank Sinatra Has a Cold 1966

Esquire just released “The 7 Greatest Stories in the History of Esquire Magazine” one of which caught my attention. Written by Gay Talese and titled “Frank Sinatra Has a Cold”, it was originally published in the April 1966 edition of Esquire magazine.

The article became one of the most celebrated magazine stories ever published, a pioneering example of what came to be called New Journalism — a work of rigorously faithful fact enlivened with the… Read the rest

Book – Frank Sinatra: The Man, the Music, the Legend

Frank Sinatra: The Man, the Music, the LegendReleased in June of 2007, this book is a collection of essays about Frank Sinatra culled from a scholarly conference held at Hofstra University in New York about 14 years ago. I had long since forgotten about he conference until the release of Frank Sinatra: The Man, the Music, the Legend. Now I recall my regrets at not attending, but I’m fortunate that the presentations made there have been preserved for all.
