Today’s Charlotte Observer reports that WNMX, the local standards-oriented station that that played artists such as Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, has abruptly changed format. The new format is focused on 60s and 70s pop music and is intended to appeal to a stronger, larger demographic. This is a recurring theme. Here in the New York area, people are still lamenting the loss of the great WNEW / WQEW. While the American Popular Standards format will remain in various pockets around the nation, in time it will undoubtedly vanish. For now at least, the best place to hear this format is likely to be via XM or Sirius Satellite Radio, the latter of which has a very strong Sinatra-themed channel.

The best place to hear Frank Sinatra is on www.MartiniInTheMorning.com. It is streaming over the internet 24/7 with no comercials and no satellite fees. They have the formula right. They have Sinatra at 6 am and pm and through out the day. But they keep true to the music and play traditional and contemporary standards without throwing in strange pop tunes
