Rickles’s Book: A Review

Don Rickles BookI’m afraid I’m a little late to the dance on this one; Many moons ago I promised a review of Don Rickles’ new book, Rickles’ Book: A Memoir. Just this past week I received my copy from Amazon and over the course of two brief evenings read through it in its entirety.

One shouldn’t approach this book as a biography, because in actuality it is a series of anecdotes told in largely chronological order. These are short tales, filled with abundant good humor and surprising candor, that highlight the significant or simply memorable episodes in his life. As you would expect from someone who’s had such a long career in the business, it is quite literally filled with stories of bygone days of entertainment. Rickles has indeed known many of the biggest names in the business and he isn’t shy about ribbing them.

But if you’re expecting Don to dish some dirt, I’m happy to say he doesn’t do it. I came away from reading this book with newfound respect for Rickles, partially because he refuses to get in the gutter when speaking about his friends and acquaintances. Whatever unflattering things he might know, he’s taking with him when he leaves this earth and that, my friends, is a rarity in this day and age.

There’s lots of anecdotes about the Rat Pack, including one heartbreaking one about Sinatra’s mental decline in his later years. Don’s love of his family is evident throughout this book. So, too, is his affection for long-time friend and fellow entertainer, Bob Newhart.

It’s easy to see why this book remains at the top of the bestseller lists. If you haven’t already picked up a copy, I strongly recommend you do.

You know, I think Bob Newhart is one of the most underrated comedians of our time. I know he is very popular and people remember his sketches, but I do think he was one of the best. It’s a bit like Woody Allen - people forget his stand up sketches like The Vodka Ad and The Moose - they just know him for his movies, which in my opinion are mediocre. But Bob, he was simply great.
