Sinatra Club member Vic Bovine writes the following in response to my posting yesterday about the new CD:
I am delighted to finally have the December 1957 Nelson Riddle arrangement of “If you are but a dream” on CD. I had it on my “This is Sinatra II LP” and played it so much it is wearing out. It is a very beautiful song which Sinatra renders an awesome tender interpretation of the lyrics. Riddle’s arrangement with strings is a tribute to his genus as an arranger for Sinatra.
Relative to “Nice n’ Easy” (pleases disregard if you are aware of the following)
- Take one > 2:21 into the recording Sinatra said “hold it” and said “Oh you dirty mother”…….. “that quarter rest is murder” he also sings at the end “put you hand on it baby that’s all” Music stops he said “ I think I swallowed a cork”:
.
- Take two > sings at the end “would you like to try it one more time” a voice from booth says we need to go again, Sinatra states “what’s the matter a couple of clams”. Sinatra states “what do you expect I don’t know the song” Sinatra says “all right”.
- Take three > stops after one bar. and said “once more”
- Take four > the alternate take on “Songs from the Heart”.
I believe the first commercially released title song from the CD is the best version for it is a tribute to Sinatra’s ever present supreme self confident and effortless style of singing. .

Thanks Vic!

I just got an album of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, & sammy Davis Jr. recorded live ( at 4 AM!) Aug 25th 1962 at the 500 club in Atlantic City. Bill Rodstein intoduces the event. It’s completely unscripted with lots of laughing & carrying on, each of them singing, Sammy singing “Lady is a Tramp” in various famous vocal impressions, more. Album is labeled a NON PUBLISHED ALBUM. No cover, but a paper sleeve with a photo. Have you ever heard of this album or event? Any help / guidance would be greatly appreciated. THANKS !!
I also own this lp (and CD), the record was given away to patron of Mr. Rodstein’s bar which was a Sinatra themed bar in the Philadelphia area. The bar was open from the mid 50’s to the late 60’s, It was called “the Sinatrama bar”. Mr. Rodstein also put out a 45 of Mr Sinatra being presented a award by the Sons of Italy in 1959. the flipside had a FS/ Dorsey aircheck from 1942 (very rare). This was one of the first bootlegs. The 500 club show was recorded with Mr. Sinatra’s approval.
